Techniques for Modeling Expression in Plucked-Guitar Tones

چکیده
Source-filter models are a well-established technique for the analysis and synthesis of many acoustic signals, including musical instruments. When applied to the task of modeling plucked-string instruments, these models provide a clear analog to the physical phenomena incurred with exciting the string; that is, an impulsive-like force from the performer excites the resonant behavior of the string. In the case of the guitar, many techniques are available for estimating and calibrating the resonant filter properties of the string, but little research has been invested in the analysis of the driving source signals, which are responsible for reproducing unique timbres associated with the performer’s articulation. In this work, we present techniques for the analysis and synthesis of plucked guitar signals with emphasis on capturing the expressive attributes of performance. This includes novel approaches for modeling the resonant string behavior and excitation signals of a source-filter model for plucked-guitar tones.

A class of physical modeling recurrent networks for analysis/synthesis of plucked string instruments
A new approach is proposed that closely synthesizes tones of plucked string instruments by using a class of physical modeling recurrent networks. The strategies employed consist of a fast training algorithm and a multistage training procedure that are able to obtain the synthesis parameters for a specific instrument automatically. The training vector can be recorded tones of most target plucked...
متن کاملFrom Expressive Notation to Model-Based Sound Synthesis: a Case Study of the Acoustic Guitar
The focus of this work is in modeling the unique sound and the playing practices of the acoustic guitar. The results can be applied to other plucked string instruments too. A new extended notation package is used to produce expressive control information. This tool allows the user to add to the input score instrumental expressions and tempo functions. The system includes also a rule formalism t...

Analysis and Synthesis of Expressive Guitar Performance Raymond Vincent Migneco Advisor: Youngmoo Edmund Kim, Ph.D. The guitar is one of the most popular and versatile instruments used in Western music cultures. Dating back to the Renaissance era, the guitar can be heard in nearly every genre of Western music, and is arguably the most widely used instrument in present-day rock music. Over the s...
متن کاملAudio Restoration Using Sound Source Modeling
This paper presents new propositions to audio restoration and enhancement based on Sound Source Modeling (SSM). The main motivation is to take advantage of prior information of generative models of sound sources when restoring or enhancing musical signals. We describe a case based on the commuted waveguide synthesis algorithm for plucked string tones and devise a scheme to extend the bandwidth ...
متن کاملAcoustic sound from the electric guitar using DSP techniques
The electric guitar has been developed to withstand electric amplification and utilize (mostly analog) signal processing in order to create a multitude of timbres and sound types. Sometimes it would be desirable to play the same electric guitar, yet with a sound that resembles a good acoustic guitar or some other member of the plucked string instrument family. In this sudy we have investigated ...
